UPI fraud is India’s fastest-growing cybercrime. If you’ve lost money through a UPI scam, you have a time-sensitive window to potentially recover your funds. Here’s exactly what to do.
Act Immediately — Every Hour Matters
Banks and cybercrime cells can freeze the fraudster’s account and hold the money if you report within 24-48 hours. After that, funds may be transferred or withdrawn.
Step-by-Step: How to Report UPI Fraud
- Step 1: Call 1930 immediately and report the fraud
- Step 2: File complaint at cybercrime.gov.in
- Step 3: Call your bank’s fraud helpline and request a chargeback
- Step 4: Email your UPI app provider (PhonePe/GPay/Paytm) dispute team
- Step 5: File FIR at local police station
- Step 6: Track your complaint at assistportal.services
Can You Get a Refund for UPI Fraud?
The possibility of a refund depends on:
- Speed of reporting — Within 24 hours gives the best chance
- Whether funds are still in the fraud account — If not withdrawn
- Whether you were deceived — vs. knowingly sent money
- RBI guidelines — Zero liability if fraud is reported within 3 working days
RBI’s Zero Liability Policy
As per RBI Circular on Customer Protection (2017), if an unauthorized transaction occurs:
- Reported within 3 working days: Full refund (zero liability)
- Reported 4-7 working days: Partial liability (max ₹10,000)
- After 7 working days: Full liability of customer
Note: This applies to unauthorized transactions (hacking/fraud), not transactions where you were tricked into sending money voluntarily.
What Information to Collect
- Transaction reference number (UPI transaction ID)
- Screenshot of the fraudulent payment
- Fraudster’s UPI ID / phone number / account details
